Weekly Updates, Nov 26

11/26/2018

This is a new thing we're going to try doing for awhile to help inform what's happening, such as for brewery activities and events.
Pub Specials
  • The new beer of the week is the Voyageur Pale Ale, get 50% off pints and growlers through Sunday.
  • Weekday Afternoon growler specials, 50% off Mon-Fri from 12-4pm.
Beer of the Week: Voyageur Pale Ale
Brewery Activities
  • Will most likely be kegging the Black Swan Stout, good thing too as the Centaur Oatmeal Stout is almost out, a record for how fast a batch is drunk, stouts are definitely the favorite during winter. Tasted the Black Swan yesterday, thought it was the best one yet and should be on tap in the next week or so. We'll be increasing the different styles of stout over winter, including the oatmeal, a brown, porter, and maybe one or two others.
  • With the newly freed up fermenter, will be brewing the Valhalla Strong Blonde.
Coming soon: Black Swan Stout
Events
  • Monday Night Sports Backtalk with Boly & Ringer from 5-7pm.
  • The Wednesday Night Trivia had some getting out of the gate issues and is not happening this week. The first contest will be next Wednesday, December 5.

Other Happenings
  • Still plenty of open water on Sand Bay, will probably be plenty of back and forth over the next few weeks, freezing over night and opening during the day. With the strong current, it doesn't take much to open up again.

Cheers,

The Long Awaited Return of History on Tap!

11/19/2018

After a hiatus to support the summer season, the always interesting and entertaining History on Tap is back and kicking off the winter discussions in December.
The Details
  • When: Thursday, December 6th at 5:30pm, discussion begins at 6pm.
  • Topic: The Crimes of Koochiching: Murder, Mayhem, & Mischief.
  • Presenters: Mike Williams, Byrne Johnson, Ashley LaVigne.
  • Drink Specials: $1 off any tap beer.
There's a free will donation to help pay for the work needed to organize the event. Support the Historical Society for the great job they do highlighting the rich history of the area.
In case you haven't been to one of these before, it's quite an event. The Koochiching County Historical Society organizes an amazing combination of visual displays, speakers, and having entertaining discussions with audience members afterwards. The visual displays include old photographs with descriptions and relevant news stories. The speakers know their stuff and often include guest speakers telling first hand accounts. And the discussion afterwards is the icing on the cake, with various people from the audience sharing their own perspectives of what really happened.

Come down to support this wonderful event, have a few beers and laughs from all the stories of the past.

Cheers,
The Events Loony

First off, thanks to everyone who voted, your input is much appreciated.

Survey says:
  • Monday: 0%
  • Tuesday: 11%
  • Wednesday: 42%
  • Thursday: 16%
  • Friday: 26%
  • Saturday: 5%
  • Sunday: 0%

Wednesday it is!

The first Trivia night will be November 28, starting at 7pm and we're expecting it'll be done around 8:30pm.

Thanks to help from Eric Johnson, here are the guidelines.

Rules for Loonys Trivia Night
  1. Judging panel decisions will be final. The judging panel will consist of the MC calling the questions, the quiz master (person who submits the questions), and the lead bartender.
  2. Pre-competition things to do: (a) Select a captain for your team. Among other duties, this person will be responsible for turning in your answer sheets. (b) Write your team name and captain on the Answer Sheets. (c) All mobile phones, PDA’s will be silenced and stowed. No electronic device may be used during the rounds.
  3. The Trivia Competition will consist of 25 questions: 5 rounds with 5 questions in each round. Questions will be read twice only. Teams will be given 2 minutes to answer each question. In the event of a tie, a bonus question will be provided for the tie breaker.
  4. Maximum team size is 4 persons. If you are smart enough to go with less...so be it! Once a player has left the competition they will not be allowed to rejoin until the completion of the current round of questions.
  5. Correct spelling on the answer sheets is not required, however, answers must be legible, and the quiz master/judges must be able to easily recognize your answers. More than one answer per question will automatically be scored as incorrect unless there are multiple answers.
  6. Answer sheets will be collected and tallied at the completion of each round. Team scores will be announced at the end of each round. The Judging panel has the final say on any disputed answers.
  7. Between each Round will be a short intermission. Devices may be used during intermission but must be silenced and stowed prior to beginning the following round.
  8. There is no polling the audience and/or no phone a friend. Resource materials and electronic devices (computers, mobile phones, PDAs, etc.) are strictly prohibited for use at the tables. Use of electronic device is grounds for immediate disqualification for the entire team.  Should it be necessary for you to use your cell phone for a call, you are asked to leave the room and will not be permitted to re-enter until the end of that round.
  9. Keep your team discussions to a low roar unless you want the neighboring team to eavesdrop, or alternatively, discuss loudly an incorrect answer and hope they WILL be eavesdropping. Anything goes. Team taunting is allowed.
  10. HAVE FUN
The trivia categories are:
  • Arts/Entertainment
  • Science/Technology
  • Sports
  • History
  • Local Info

There will be prizes for the winning team.

A Friendsgiving Party!

11/19/2018

It started about a week ago with somebody asking us if we were going to be open on Thanksgiving. Our reply was of course we are! This being from spending a number of years in a different place where you don't know hardly anybody and for the holidays, what would one do but of course head down to your favorite pub for the day off. With this, often times the establishment would have some type of pot luck or other food specials, making the holiday a fun time for what otherwise could have a bit of a drag. So, continuing in that tradition and one thing leading to another with the original Thanksgiving question and discussion and presto, we have Friendsgiving. Anyone is welcome to come down, have some amazing food and have a great time.
The Details
  • From 12-4pm with potluck food being served at 2pm.
  • 2-1 Beverage Specials
  • Open Mic & Karaoke
  • Free Darts and Pool
Hope to see you this Thursday and if you'd like to stay informed of upcoming happenings, check out the events page for weekly events, upcoming live music, parties and more.

Cheers,
