Live Music Schedule This Fall, Starting Tonight!

9/30/2017

Just a little heads-up on some amazing musicians that will be playing at Loony's Brew over the new few months.
  • September 30, Tonight: Starting at 7pm, Megan Resch from Duluth will be gracing the stage and sharing her beautiful voice and guitar playing.
  • October 28: This will be in combination with a Halloween party, we have a music couple from the Duluth area that will be performing, more details in the next few weeks.
  • End of Nov/Early December: Gordon Lewis from Birchdale and now Colorado will be visiting again, always a great time with his diverse and eclectic range of guitar and other instruments playing styles.
Others that played this summer that could be added once schedules allow include Jean-Paul De Roover from Thunder Bay, Sloughgrass from Birchdale, and the local legendary guitar maestro Gary Hooker,  now from the Virginia area.

Would you like to play at Loony's Brew?
While we currently have about one live band per month, sometimes 2-3, we'd love to be able to increase it to every Saturday night. If you're a musician, performer, or in a band, here's what we can offer:
  • A stage that best fits 1-2 people, can do three and sometimes a couple more if properly organized.
  • An audience that enjoys live music from different styles and genres.
  • An array of house instruments and microphone setup if you just happen to be in the area and feel the urge to play.
  • An appropriate pay rate given our pub and audience size, generally around 30-50 people.
  • An opportunity to play at a brewery, get to try out a few outstanding craft beers on the house.
  • Local accommodations: Plenty of places to stay in the area.
  • Other local venues: If interested, can work something out to play at a few places between Ranier, International Falls, and Fort Francis,  helping to get a little more from making the trip, build of a broader local audience, etc.
If you'd like to add Loony's Brew to your schedule, even if not for a Saturday, contact us and let us know the relevant information, such as what type of music, how many people, when you can play, etc.

See you tonight, music starts at 7pm!
Cheers,
Loony's Brew

1 Liter, 34 Ounce Stein
While not the Everest of steins (that would be the 32 liter versions in Germany), the 1 Liter Loony's Brew stein isn't chump change and can fill a little more than two regular size pints.

Side by Side Comparison
On the right you can see the relative sizes with a side by side comparison.

The 1 Liter version is also available for a regular pour without purchasing the glass, pricing is dependent on the beer selected.
Both are available now, beers on tap include the Stubborn Moose Dry Stout, Sand Bay Wheat, Valhalla Blonde, Drunken Loon Dark Belgian, Hoppy Folly Strong IPA, and Voyageur Pale Ale.

Monthly Homebrewing Event

9/21/2017

Starting in October, Loony's Brew will have a once a month get together for people interested in brewing beer. This will be the first Wednesday of each month, with the first one being October 4th, from 6-8pm.

What will be talked about or activities?
As I've never ran one of these before and want the ability to adapt to whatever works best, this is fairly open ended, from which could include:
  • Different types of beers we've tried making.
  • Different types we'd like to try.
  • Results from different yeasts used.
  • Favorite craft beers had from other breweries.
  • Different process aspects, such as temperatures used, temperature control, clarifying agents, filters, carbonation techniques.
  • Different ingredients used, including grains/malt, adjuncts, hops, and spices.
  • Local ingredient options, such as herbs, hops, fruits.
  • Sharing results of recent batches.
  • Sharing yeasts from past batches.
  • Occasional tours of the brewery.
  • We could get into some serious experimentation, such as everyone brewing the same recipe but with one difference each, such as a different yeast, hops, spices, etc.
  • Internal competitions with prizes.
  • Sharing useful books, websites, other information sources.
  • The day and times are generally flexible, was thinking of a day that doesn't get in the way of weekend activities, but if Wednesday doesn't work for anyone and Tuesdays or Thursdays are better, so be it. Likewise for times. A bonus for having it on Wednesday is Open Mic/Karaoke would follow immediately afterwards.
This will be basic to start out with, I'll have something set up in the back room on one of the tables. If anyone has ideas or suggestions, feel free to send me a note in the contact form or leaving a comment on this blog post.

Cheers,
Matt
