To help take the chill off and warm up a bit, tonight we'll be serving Gluehwein, otherwise known as Mulled Wine, including a combination of red wine, spices such as cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, orange slices and more, all heated up together to form a great tasting beverage during the cold and frigid winter season.
This has been a popular beverage in Europe going back to the 2nd century. When I lived in Antwerp, Belgium, it was common around Christmas time for just about every bar or pub to have their own version of Gluehwein, A great beverage to warm up with after being outside for any length of time. Many towns and cities in northern Europe would go a bit further, setting up ice skating rinks in the town square surrounded by all types of booths serving Gluehwein and hot food appetizers with a myriad of lights all over the place. This was great as the celebrations took your mind off of the cold weather and actually made it a fun time, something to look forward to. Come down to Loony's Brew tonight to try some and don't forget tomorrow night, Saturday, will be a combination of the band Sloughgrass starting at 8pm and an Ugly Sweater Contest.
